Supporting the global energy transition
In 2024, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) focused, among other things, on its priority area of action 'Advancing the energy transition'.
Implementing the global targets for renewable energies and energy efficiency agreed at the 2023 Climate Change Conference (COP28) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is a top priority for Germany. Thus, the IKI defines the global energy transition as a prioritised field of action in its strategy up to 2030.
Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) are an important component for a just energy transition. The IKI is involved in three of the four JETPs concluded to date with German participation. IKI projects contributed to a just transition in 2024 particularly in Indonesia and South Africa: away from a coal-, gas-, and oil-based economy and towards an economy that is founded on renewable energies and the implementation of efficiency measures to achieve significant reductions in electricity consumption.
The IKI supported the implementation of the global energy transition through deposits in various funds. The World Bank Group’s “Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme” (ESMAP) fund is one of the best established multilateral fund initiatives in this topic area. The IKI provided a further 15 million euros for the ESMAP in 2024 for the energy transition. It also invested 15 million euros in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s multi-donor initiative “The Energy Pillar of Egypt’s Nexus Water-Food-Energy Programme – NWFE” in 2024. Part of the IKI grant will be used to provide new training for employees at fossil fuel power plants to work with renewable energies.
As part of the 2023 thematic call (call conclusion 2024), the IKI is providing funding of up to 60 million euros for the key topics of grid flexibilisation, financing for the energy transition, expansion of renewable energies in sub-Saharan Africa and energy efficiency in the refrigeration industry. By the end of 2024, four project outlines in these topic areas were invited to submit detailed project proposals. Up to 20 million euros have been envisaged for the promotion of building energy efficiency in the 2024 thematic call.
The expansion of renewable energies and the economic diversification for a just coal phase-out also play a key role in the Colombia country call. The IKI will be funding a new project with a total volume of up to 25 million euros in the future. The new call launched at COP29 by the Mitigation Action Facility co-financed by the IKI also focuses on the topic of energy. In addition to the launch of new projects, five outlines for projects with a focus on renewable energies and energy efficiency in Bhutan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Colombia and Mauritius were chosen from the 2023 and 2024 calls.
