UN Climate Change Conference 2024 in Baku
The International Climate Initiative at COP29 in Azerbaijan
Since the adoption of the Paris Agreement on climate change, limiting global warming to well below two degrees, and ideally to 1.5 degrees, has been a key objective of international efforts.
Progress is already being made around the world: The development of wind and solar energy is progressing in many countries, more and more cities are focusing on sustainable mobility, and many companies are investing in sustainable technologies such as green hydrogen. However, the global community is not yet on track to meet its climate targets. Extreme weather events, such as heat waves and hurricanes, whose frequency and intensity are influenced by progressive climate change, were also observed last year and continue to increase.
Tackling the climate crisis was therefore a top priority for the German government. At the 29th World Climate Conference, the COP29 in Azerbaijan, it will work to advance international climate actopm through ambitious agreements.
COP29 took place in Baku from 11 to 22 November - and the International Climate Initiative (IKI) was once again present at the conference with a wide range of topics and formats.
The COP29
Financing climate action
A new climate finance target was to be agreed at this year's COP. The USD 100 billion per year that developed countries have pledged for the period 2020-2025 is not enough to finance the global transformation and sufficient resilience. The funding required is in the trillions of dollars, which of course cannot be raised through traditional public climate finance. A completely different climate finance target is therefore needed, both quantitatively and qualitatively, that is 'fit for purpose' and in line with current economic and international developments.

Mitigating greenhouse gases in industry
The industrial sector, particularly steel, cement and chemicals, accounts for about a quarter of global CO2 emissions from the energy system. Industrial processes continue to expand and capacities increase, particularly in the Global South. It is therefore crucial to find solutions at the global level to minimise emissions from this growth.

The German government launched the new funding round during the IKI High Level Event at COP29.
The global energy transition is progressing faster than ever before. Almost a third of the world's electricity worldwide now comes from renewable, climate-friendly sources. Nevertheless, we need to take further steps. We must ensure that renewable energies can be reliably integrated into the grid and that even more countries are put in a position to expand and restructure their energy supply climate-neutral. To this end, the World Climate Conference in Baku must set the right course.
The climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis are inextricably linked. Through the International Climate Initiative, we are showing that nature-based solutions have multiple benefits in the fight against biodiversity loss, in climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas reduction. In view of the huge need for investment, this is also economically smart. These projects create new sources of income, thereby sustainably improving the livelihoods of local communities.
The climate crisis is the major security issue of our day and age. Many conflicts are already being negatively affected by the climate crisis: extreme heat, droughts and floods are exacerbating the fight for scarce resources. Climate protection is therefore also conflict prevention. With the International Climate Initiative, we are supporting innovative project ideas that encompass both climate adaptation and peace-promoting measures in order to support our partner countries, especially in African regions that are particularly affected by the climate crisis.
