New year, many new IKI projects

Here you will find an overview of the funding areas in which our latest projects have been launched.

Since 2008, the German Federal Government has been supporting climate action and biodiversity conversation through the International Climate Initiative (IKI). More than 1,000 projects in around 150 partner countries have been supported with a total of almost 7.5 billion euros.

Three new projects in the area of mitigation address the issue of finance. One project will support analysis of who is providing climate finance, to which regions and sectors it is going, and what financial instruments are being used. Financial institutions are also addressed: A project is strengthening their expertise in climate risk management and promoting innovative green financial instruments. Another focuses on green guarantees to leverage private capital. IKI also supports a fund that finances projects in the development phase to enable the use of climate-friendly technologies.

Two new IKI projects address just transition in the priority countries of South Africa and Indonesia. Other new mitigation projects address the most potent known greenhouse gas, SF6, the decarbonisation of transport and transmission grids. In addition, the Federal Ministry for the Environment is being supported in its activities to implement the Paris Climate Agreement.

There are also new projects in the other funding areas: Two new projects will protect peatlands in South America and the Western Pacific. In the area of biodiversity, the IKI is supporting two new funds. One aims to accelerate and expand the implementation of partner countries' National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). The second mobilises substantial investment to reduce threats to vulnerable ecosystems in World Heritage Sites and Important Biodiversity Areas in six countries. Another project supports nature-based solutions.

The following is an overview of the new projects, which also illustrates the broad spectrum of the IKI in terms of content and regions:

We look forward to working together and wish the IKI implementing organisations and their partners a good start to the project!
