Biodiversity and Beyond: The Story of Point Calimere
Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary is Tamil Nadu's first Ramsar Site, covering 38,500 ha. It includes diverse habitats: salt swamps, mangroves, and Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest. Home to over 0.1 million migratory waterbirds and 269 bird species, including the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper, it is also an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. This sanctuary stabilises the coastline, supports local communities, and provides nurseries for various aquatic species.
