Enabling Long Term Defossilisation Pathways through Power-to-X (PtX Pathways)

As part of the International PtX Hub, PtX Pathways supports the development of sustainable Power-to-X (PtX) and hydrogen markets as a building block for the energy transition in Morocco, South Africa, and Argentina. The project focuses on the specific needs of the countries and their individual motivations. The project supports the responsible ministries for energy or economy in the development of allocation scenarios for PtX, including the analysis of value chains. Jointly with the partners, the team identifies opportunities for business development and derives recommendations for improving the regulatory framework for PtX. In Morocco, a Power-to-Liquid pilot plant demonstrates the entire PtX value chain, paving the way for scaling and capacity development. Good practices, tools and guidelines are disseminated to other countries via the International PtX Hub and thus fed into the PtX debate in other markets.

State of implementation/results

    Global
    • The PtX Hub organised a high-level event at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2023, focusing on partner needs in developing PtX markets with delegations from Argentina, Morocco and South Africa.
    • The "Business Opportunity Analyzer" supports policymakers and project developers in understanding country’s specific PtX potentials per sector (ptx-hub.org/…).
    • Delegations from Argentina, Morocco, and South Africa attended a maritime transport training at the Transport and Climate Change Week 2023 (www.transportweek.org) in Berlin and a delegation trip to Copenhagen in September.
    Argentina
    • The studies “Decarbonisation and allocation scenarios for low emission hydrogen and Power-to-X in Argentina” (ptx-hub.org/…) and “12 Insights on hydrogen - Argentina edition” (ptx-hub.org/…) were published.
    • Under the umbrella of “Women in Green Hydrogen” (WIGH) and in collaboration with the network Association for Women in Sustainable Energies in Argentina, the PtX Hub organised an online seminar and a workshop in Buenos Aires in 2023 to discuss the possibilities to promote women in the energy and hydrogen sector in Argentina.
    • In February 2023, the PtX Hub jointly with Agora Energy Transition, Agora Industry and the Argentinian Fundacion Torcuato Di Tella published a policy brief on “Argentina as a hub for green ammonia: A forward-looking development strategy for addressing the global energy and climate crises” (ptx-hub.org/…).
    Morocco
    • A training on PtX financing took place in November 2023.
    • In September 2023, the PtX Hub had a decisive role in co-organizing the German-Moroccan event at the PtX Summit in Marrakech.
    • PtX Hub gave a keynote at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) “Exploiting the full potential of the EU-Morocco Green Partnership” in September 2023.
    • A pre-feasibility study identified viable technical and financial concepts for realising a Power-to-Liquid pilot plant at the Research & Development facility of project partner Institute Research Energy Solar And Energy Nouvelles (IRESEN) and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) at the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) industrial site.
    • Meetings were held at industrial sites (Mohammedia, Safi, Jorf lasfar, Fes) to identify factories and sectors that qualify as a CO2 point source for future PtX plants, such as steel plants, cement plants, thermal power plants, and controlled landfills.
    South Africa
    • During the South African Green Hydrogen Summit 2023 the PtX Hub showcased the project and hosted three knowledge sessions. In 2022, the International PtX Hub organised two panels and spoke on various sessions, including one on Green Shipping (ptx-hub.org/…)
    • In August 2023, the PtX Hub provided a PtX and Green Hydrogen training to the Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA).
    • A study to be published identified sustainable carbon sources in South Africa to produce PtX products and synthetic fuels.
    • In June 2023, the PtX Hub held a workshop on the emerging regulatory framework for certifying greenhouse gas emission accounting and the sustainability of hydrogen and PtX production, based on the European Commission's recent acts for the Renewable Energy Directive II.
