Enabling Long Term Defossilisation Pathways through Power-to-X (PtX Pathways)
As part of the International PtX Hub, PtX Pathways supports the development of sustainable Power-to-X (PtX) and hydrogen markets as a building block for the energy transition in Morocco, South Africa, and Argentina. The project focuses on the specific needs of the countries and their individual motivations. The project supports the responsible ministries for energy or economy in the development of allocation scenarios for PtX, including the analysis of value chains. Jointly with the partners, the team identifies opportunities for business development and derives recommendations for improving the regulatory framework for PtX. In Morocco, a Power-to-Liquid pilot plant demonstrates the entire PtX value chain, paving the way for scaling and capacity development. Good practices, tools and guidelines are disseminated to other countries via the International PtX Hub and thus fed into the PtX debate in other markets.

State of implementation/results
- Global:
- PtX Hub held an official side event at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) on carbon sourcing with high-level BMZ and BMWK contributions ptx-hub.org/… (03/2024).
- Delegates from Argentina, Morocco and South Africa exchanged with German research institutes and companies pioneering PtX products such as e-fuels and green ammonia. On two panels at ACHEMA 2024 in Frankfurt, the world’s largest process industry fair, speakers from Argentina, Morocco, Kenya, and South Africa promoted their countries’ progress and ambitions to the international audience ptx-hub.org/… (06/ 2024).
- 50 women were trained in an online Power-to-X Basic training organised together with the Association for Women in Renewable Energy (AMES) in Argentina.
- May and August 2024: PtX Hub and its partners CEARE and the International Development Bank organised two workshops to discuss the regulatory needs for hydrogen projects.
- Two studies – “CO2 Sources for PtX Production in Argentina” (English, Spanish) and “Analysis of the port infrastructure in the Patagonian coastline of Argentina for the development of green hydrogen and PtX-projects” (Spanish) – were published. Together with Dechema, the PtX Hub published an interactive map of CO2 sources in Argentina. Several further technical reports and policy notes have been published (06/2024).
- PtX Hub and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) showcased engineering students' projects on synthetic fuels from green hydrogen at the EMINES school, with PtX Hub's team involved in coaching and lectures to enhance students' understanding of this technology (03/2024).
- PtX Hub supported the first Euromed University of Fez conference on green hydrogen, featuring Andreas Meurer's, Scientific Researcher at the German Aerospace Center, presentation on PtX, engaging teachers, researchers, and students in discussions on sustainable energy technologies (04/2024).
- Publication of the study “Carbon Capture in South Africa: an overview of Carbon Capture and Storage or Utilisation in South Africa” (03/2024).
- PtX Hub organised a workshop with stakeholders (private sector, project developers, government stakeholders and non-governmental organisations) to present the interim results of the “Power-to-X Allocation Study: Power-to-X to enable and advance the long-term transformation of South Africa’s Energy System” (05/2024).
- PtX Hub provided a Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) training to key players from across the hydrocarbons ecosystem (05/2024).
- Under the banner of Green Hydrogen South Africa (GHSA), BMZ project H2.SA and PtX Hub implemented three trainings on “Gender Sensitivity” for moderation and facilitation and two certification trainings enhancing industry knowledge in South Africa.
