Improving Energy Efficiency in the Water Sector
As of: May 2020
Objective and activities
The purpose of the project was to improve energy efficiency in the operation of the water pumps of the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ). In the first phase the project partners retooled the pumps in the governorates of Balqa, Madaba and Zarqa. To achieve this, the potentials for energy saving at the major power users were identified, and measures to improve energy efficiency were then devised (for example procurement of new pumps, improvement of operation and repair processes through outsourcing). Build operate transfer and contracting schemes were developed in order to implement the measures. By this the WAJ involved the private sector as a key investor. In the course of the project, the gained experiences, standards and financing approaches were disseminated nationwide through several events and on the project website.
State of implementation/results
- Project is completed
- In the framework of Energy Audits data on energy consumption and mitigation potential in water pumping stations have been identified. Thereafter two pilot projects with participation of the private sector have been realized:
- The pilot in Baqourieh operates since November 2009. The final energy consumption has been reduced by 33%. Every year there are savings of 1,5 GWh and 65.000 € as well as 1.100 t CO2.
- In the case of the pumping stations in Lib and Wala near Madabas a private sector consortium between the German pump producer Wilo and the Jordanian consulting firm Engicon used an Energy Performance Contracting model. The new pumps operate since November 2014. The annual CO2 reduction amount to 2.500 t.
- Through the cooperation with the Water Authority of Jordan the importance of the topic of energy efficiency in the water sector has been successfully placed in the political and public debate in Jordan. Today, Jordanian water haulage and water transport are more climate-friendly. The two pilot projects are the basis for the application in further pumping stations in Jordan.
