7th Science–Policy Forum for Biodiversity – Session 2: Building Pipelines to Monitor Ecosystem Service Provision
As part of the 7th Science–Policy Forum for Biodiversity at CBD COP17, Session 1B, “Building Pipelines to Monitor Ecosystem Service Provision”, will bring together scientists, policymakers, international organisations and other relevant stakeholders to explore how data, information and artificial intelligence can strengthen biodiversity and ecosystem service monitoring.
Hosted by the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), Conservation Science Partners (CSP), FAO and GIZ, the session will contribute to the implementation of Target 21 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by promoting access to data, information and knowledge for informed decision-making and effective action for biodiversity.
The discussion will focus on the responsible use and management of data and artificial intelligence across different scales. Participants will examine how to improve data access, sharing and interpretation to support policy implementation and strengthen collaboration among governments, the scientific community, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, the private sector, practitioners and civil society.
Key topics will include data governance, harmonised data policies, geographic and taxonomic gaps, data accessibility and quality, and knowledge management. The session will explore both the opportunities and challenges associated with big data and artificial intelligence in monitoring ecosystem service provision.
Particular attention will be given to strengthening regional and global pollinator monitoring platforms drawing on national data, and their potential to support the assessment of progress in implementing the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The session will take place in person on Saturday, 24 October 2026, from 10:30 to 12:00 Armenia time (GMT+4), in the Blue Zone. The room will be confirmed.
