Building Coordination for Multi-stakeholder Collaboration on Sustainable Management in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea
Peatland ecosystems across Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea are globally significant carbon stores and biodiversity-rich landscapes, but face increasing pressures from drainage, land-use change, fire and climate impacts.
This session will explore practical approaches to halting peatland degradation and loss across both lowland and upland peatland landscapes. Bringing together regional experiences and perspectives, the session will highlight lessons learned, innovative solutions and opportunities for cross-border collaboration in peatland protection, sustainable management and restoration. It will demonstrate how safeguarding peatlands can contribute to climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
The discussion will also consider pathways for strengthening policy, financing, knowledge exchange and implementation, supporting ASEAN’s collective contribution to global climate action and the goals of the Paris Agreement. Opportunities and challenges for knowledge sharing and capacity development support between Malaysia and Indonesia (as ASEAN Member States) and Papua New Guinea (as observer to ASEAN) will also be discussed cooperation to address climate change, extreme weather events and climate and environment-related issues such as water and air pollution, sea level rise, adaptation and mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV), climate change impact, vulnerability, and adaptation assessment, climate change projection, climate finance, implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions, and long-term strategies.
